For South African lawyers, in Microsoft Word

From question to tracked change

LawAngel reads the document you have open in Word, answers your questions with the passages it relied on, reviews contracts and court papers, and drafts. Nothing it proposes changes the document until you accept it.

In a private beta. For now LawAngel is open to the lawyers testing it, who get their accounts from the LawAngel team.

What LawAngel does

LawAngel works in a pane beside your document, in Word on Windows and on a Mac. This is what it does today, in plain words.

  1. The Assistant

Ask about the open document or about South African law, or ask for a change. The Assistant answers with the passages it relied on, and proposes changes and comments as cards that you accept or reject.

It searches LawAngel's library of South African law and your matter's files with questions of its own, reads the document's exact words and definitions, and checks a case citation against South African sources before relying on it. When your answer would help, such as whom you act for, it asks, with answers to choose from. A change you accept goes in as a tracked change.

  2. The Review

A contract or a court paper reviewed from your side, each finding with how much it matters, the change it proposes and what to ask for.

The other side's affidavits and pleadings are answered paragraph by paragraph, with draft answers and the evidence to gather, and are never changed; your client's own papers are checked before filing. A Review is kept until you delete it, so it opens again on any computer.

  3. Draft

A first draft of an agreement from your instructions, put into the document as a starting point.

Fill a template's blanks from a signed agreement or a term sheet, or bring in a clause from another contract.

  4. The tools

The checks a careful reader makes, on the whole document: defined terms, cross-references, and figures in words that do not match their numerals.

A chronology of a document's events, the issues it raises under South African law, its people and companies, and who must do what by when. Before it goes out: a send-ready check, one font and spacing for the body, a clean copy and redaction.

  5. Matters

A matter keeps a case's files, people and notes together, and LawAngel uses them when you work on its documents.

LawAngel reads each file you add, such as PDFs, Word and Excel files, and emails with their attachments, so the AI can use it. A matter's page also opens in a wide window beside Word, and a person's South African ID number shows the date of birth and the age it gives.

Around the work

  • On any computer

Your conversations, Reviews and settings are kept on LawAngel's server, so they open wherever you sign in.

  • What it remembers

How you like to work, and facts about your clients and matters, which you can see, delete or switch off in Settings.

  • The web, when it needs it

It can search the web, linking each source it uses, and prefers South Africa's own sources for South African law.

  • Dictation

Speak a question instead of typing it.

A finding of the Review

Here, a finding in a sale of land: why it matters, its change to the clause as a tracked change, what to ask for, what to settle for and when to walk away, and the Act it relies on. Nothing goes into the document until you accept it.

Your work, during the beta

  • Kept in Germany, on LawAngel's server in a data center there.
  • Encrypted: conversations, Reviews, attached PDFs and matter files, with a key kept for your account.
  • Given to the AI as a feature needs it: your question, the document or its relevant parts, the files you attach and your matter's details, ID numbers included, go to the AI service that writes the answer.
  • Yours to delete: a conversation, a Review, a file or a whole matter, at any time.
  • Seen by the team, on record: to run the beta and fix problems, the LawAngel team can see testers' work, and each time they open it is recorded with the reason.
  • A client's matter only with the client's agreement; otherwise, try LawAngel on your own documents.
